The Holidays are just days away. Every year many of us spend countless hours in preparation of grand meals and desserts only to end up with our celebrations cut short with an upset stomach. If you find tummy troubles, here are some helpful foods that you might want to stock up on that can offer you relief from an irritated stomach.

Papaya
is often used to treat digestive problems such as gas, bloating, diarrhea and heartburn. Papaya’s natural digestive enzyme, papain, breaks down foods that may be irritating to the stomach. Just a half of a thinly sliced piece of this fruit will do the trick to

calm symptoms.

Apples
are not only fall favorites, but are good for fighting a queasy stomach because they are rich in enzymes and the soluble fiber, pectin, that help to break down stomach irritants from other foods. And as a bonus, also lowers cholesterol. Apples are best baked if you have a particularly sensitive stomach.

Cinnamon
is a spice that can treat a number of tummy problems from morning sickness to diarrhea gas. It stimulates the digestive system, which moves foods along the digestive tract smoothly. You can simply make a plain cinnamon tea by adding
‘/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder to one cup of hot water and let stand for five minutes before drinking.

Ginger
has been a go to tummy helper for a long time. Ginger ale has a history of being the remedy to settle an upset stomach. Why? Ginger is believed to reduce nausea and inflammation. If you don’t like the “fizzies” that come with the carbonation of ginger ale, try ginger tea or fresh ginger soaked in hot water for a few minutes.

Mint and thyme
are two herbs that stimulate digestion and move food smoothly through the digestive tract. Each of these can be used to make a simple tea to ease stomach cramps and relieve pressure caused by gas and bloating. You can also chew on mint leaves for relief.

Fennel or caraway seeds
can work wonders to improve digestion and to
ease gas and bloating. Add one teaspoon caraway or fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water and
cover and let steep for ten minutes. Strain, and

drink three cups a day on an empty stomach for best
results until you are feeling better. You can also
chew on the seeds after a meal to prevent stomach upsets.

Plain crackers work great to settle an upset
stomach because they are low in fiber and easy to digest, unless, of course you have a gluten allergy or sensitivity.

And you can continue to feel good all year long with these foods that can help boost your body’s immune system, keeping you from getting sick.

Broccoli. Two cups a week and your white blood cells could attack invading flu viruses as
vigorously as they did when you were a kid. Sulforaphane, a chemical found in broccoli,

Seafood.
Two six-ounce servings of seafood weekly can cut the lifespan of viruses by 42 percent. Seafood is packed with selenium and zinc, both immunity boosting nutrients.

Pink grapefruit can cut your risk of the flu as much as 20 percent. Pink grapefruit contains double the antioxidants of white grapefruit, and are packed full of antioxidants that kick-start the

growth of virus-killing immune cells.

Garlic
is a herb packed with 70 sulfur compounds that fire up infection-fighting antibodies within 48 hours. One clove a day can do the trick. For best results, let chopped garlic sit on the cutting board for 10 minutes before cooking as the air allows the garlic’s sulfur compounds into their most active flu-fighting form.

10 Unsuspected Foods That Help Protect Your Teeth And Gums

A Beautiful Smile and Healthy Gums always require regular brushing, flossing, and dental care, but a diet rich is essential vitamins and minerals also make an important contribution to one’s overall dental health. We often overlook the importance of good nutrition in keeping our smiles beautiful and our mouths healthy. Here are ten foods that can contribute to our overall oral health:

1. Water – Natures Gift For Healthy Teeth and Gums

Drinking water keeps your gums and oral tissues hydrated and is a great way to stimulate saliva flow. This Saliva Flow is one of your bodies defenses against the bacteria that cause plaque and cavities. Rinsing your mouth with water also helps wash away trapped food particles that decompose in the mouth and can cause bad breath. Water also dilutes the concentration of bad breath causing byproducts of anaerobic bacteria metabolism (see my blog on 10 tips to avoid bad breath). You should always try to drink six 8-ounce glasses of purified water each day to keep your gums (and whole body) hydrated and to stimulate saliva. If you can”t brush your teeth after eating, be sure to rinse your mouth with water.

2. Parsley –A Natural Bad Breath Remedy That Leaves Sweet-Smelling Breath

Chewing parsley or mint leaves aftert meals will help you maintain sweet-smelling breath. These herbs contain monoterpenes, volatile substances that travel quickly from your bloodstream to your lungs, where their odor is released via your breath. Try This: Top zesty dishes with a few tablespoons of minced fresh parsley or garnish dessert with a few sprigs of fresh mint. You can also chew parsley or mint leaves for a change of pace.

3. Green Tea -Helps Removes Plaque and Bad Breath

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains wonderful substances called catechins. Catechins also help kill the the bacteria that cause bad breath. Try This: Drink 2 to 5 cups of green tea (regular or decaffeinated) a day, says Mindy Green, director of research at the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colo. She suggests making a thermos of green tea to drink at work. At night prior to tetiring for bed, steep 3 to 4 green tea bags in 4 cups of boiling-hot water in a covered thermos for three to five minutes. Remove the bags. That’s Right!! I said ONIONS. Onions contain powerful antibacterial sulfur compounds. In a 1997 test tube study, onions killed various types of bacteria, including S mutans. Research also shows onions are most the most effective when eaten freshly peeled and raw. The major downside, raw onions can make your breath stink, so be sure to have some fresh parsley on hand (see point 2 or my blog on bad breath). Try This: Add a few onion slices to salads and sandwiches each day.

5. Celery – Protects Teeth from Cavities

Celery protects your teeth in two ways, says Lana Rozenberg, D.D.S., a holistic dentist and founder of Rozenberg Dental Day Spa in New York City. The extra chewing it requires produces extra saliva, which neutralizes the bacteria Streptococcus mutans that causes cavities. Actually, chewing on naturally fibrous and abrasive foods massages gums and cleans between teeth. Suggestion: Snack on a handful of raw celery or carrots once a day to help protect gums and teeth.

6. Shiitake Mushrooms – Prevents from Creating Plaque

A Research Study in 2000 on tooth caries showed that lentinan, a sugar found in shiitake mushrooms, prevents mouth bacteria from creating plaque. Suggestion A few times a week, add four to five sliced shiitakes to soups or stir-fries. Buy fresh shiitakes or dried ones: Dried shittakes are easily reconstituted by soaking them in hot water for about 25 minutes before use.

7. Wasabi – Protect Teeth from Cavities

Wasabi, the devilish green sauce served with tuna steaks, is also known as Japanese horse-radish. This condiment not only adds zing to sushi, it also protects your teeth. A 2000 study in Biofactors revealed that the substances that make wasabi taste hot, called atessothiocy, also inhibit the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. Eating wasabi a few times a week will protect you from cavities. For a delicious and smile-saving asian salad dressing, combine 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon honey (or sugar or sugar substitute), 1 teaspoon wasabi paste, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil. (I also sometimes add 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Note: this Dijon is also good in plain od vinegar and oil)

8. Sesame Seeds – Clean Teeth and Remove Plaque

According to fossils, our Paleolithic ancestors had great teeth. Anthropologists suggest that this is partly due to the cleansing action of primitive foods like seeds, which slough off plaque and help build tooth enamel. Sesame seeds, for example, are also high in calcium, which help preserve the bone around your teeth and gums .Suggestion: Sprinkle a tablespoon of sesame seeds on salads and steamed vegetables a couple times a week for a gentle teeth cleaning and 87 mg of calcium.

9. Kiwis – Prevents Gum Disease

Kiwis are Vitamin C atom bombs. Kiwis contain more vitamin C than any other fruit their size., Actually, one large kiwi supplies more than 100 percent of your recommended daily amount of vitamin C and it tastes good too!. Research shows that a vitamin C deficiency causes the collagen network in your gums to break down, making your gums tender and more susceptible to the bacteria that cause gum (periodontal) disease. Suggestion: Try topping your cereal or oatmeal with Kiwi and fruit instead of sugar at breakfast tomorrow.

10. Cheese – Preserves and Rebuild Tooth Enamel

During the last decade, studies proved that cheese, with its low carbohydrate and high calcium and phosphate content, provides several benefits for your teeth. It helps balance your mouth’s pH by making it more basic (an acidic pH encourages the growth of dental cavity-causing bacteria). Cheese also supples calcium and phosphate which builds tooth enamel and produces saliva, which helps fight the bacteria that cause dental cavities and gum disease. Bad breath, what on Earth can I do?

You Can Prevent Bad Breath:

Here are 10 tips to help prevent bad breath or halitosis that can easily be added to our everyday lives:

1. Drink plenty of water

Yes, it’s that simple. Anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that don’t use or need oxygen to survive) in the mouth break down proteins and sugars into volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) that create the foul odors carried by your breath. Anaerobic bacteria love and thrive on dry conditions. By drinking water frequently, you create an unfriendly environment for these bacteria. Water also dilutes the concentration of VSCs. Consequently, the odour coming from your mouth may not be strong enough to be offensive. So drink water as often as you can.

2. Maintain a good oral hygiene

Good ORAL HYGIENE alone won’t stop bad breath, however, good oral hygiene sure helps. If you don’t already brush and floss two times a day, you should start. You need to start cleaning your tongue using a brush or tongue scraper. The back of your tongue is a resort for anaerobic bacteria. A clean pink tongue makes the living conditions unattractive for these bacteria.

3. Treat existing oral diseases

Existing oral diseases such as gum disease and candida infections may be the culprit causing your bad breath. If this is the case, you need to go see your dentist as soon as possible.

Furthermore, you should also make sure that faulty dental work isn’t negatively affecting your oral health and breath (see blog on examples of faulty work that can cause bad breath).

4. Use natural antibiotics

Nature provides us its own healing powers through herbs which have many antibiotic characteristics. Fresh Parsley, and Aloe Vera are effective in preventing bad breath.

Try chewing fresh parsley; it detoxifies your mouth and also contains abundant chlorophyll which sweetens your breath. Chewing also increases the flow of saliva which helps avoid dry mouth.

You can also make your own mouthwash by using ALOE VERA juice.. Buy diluted aloe vera juice at your local pharmacy or herbal store and mix two teaspoons of it to a tumbler of water.

5. Avoid commercial mouthwashes ESP with alcohol

Many commercial mouthwashes contain large amount of alcohol. Alcohol leads to dry mouth.

As stated before, DRY MOUTH creates the perfect condition for anaerobic bacteria to manufacture sulfur compounds — not to mention bad breath. In addition to alcohol, most commercial mouthwashes contain unnecessary ingredients such as flavoring and dyes to make them attractive to general public. This is why you see the same mouthwash in four different colors. Constant use of such mouthwashes could lead to chronic bad breath, which is a condition much harder to treat. Commercial mouthwashes have recently been linked to some other potential health hazards. Try using the ALOE VERA Mouthwash from tip #4 instead.

6. Chew sugarless gum

The chewing process increases saliva flow thus making your oral environment unattractive to anaerobic bacteria. Yes, chewing fresh parsley is good for you, but sugarless gum is much more flexible. It’s easy to pop in gum anywhere at any time. .

If you have bad breath, you shouldn’t chew gums containing SUGAR. The sugar in most gums you chew is easily broken down into VSCs by anaerobic bacteria. Only chew SUGARLESS GUM.

7. Eat crisp fruits and vegetables

By eating crisp fruits and vegetables such as apple, celery, cucumber and carrot, your mouth is naturally cleaned. Plaque and food particles between your teeth and gums are removed during this process.

You also increase your saliva flow when you eat crisp food, not to mention, fruits and vegetable are good for your health and should always be included in your regular diet.

8. Switch to tea

Everywhere you look these days there seems to be a coffee shop of some kind. If you are having bad breath concerns, maybe it’s time to switch to tea.

Coffee creates a thin coating on your tongue. This thin coating blocks the oxygen supply to the lower levels of the tongue. This is a perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria, which thrive when there is little or no oxygen. On the other hand, tea doesn’t cause this coating and some research suggest it may also fight bad breath and other health problems as covered in other blogs we have written.


9. You can make your own toothpaste

As in commercial mouth wash, commercial toothpastes contain unnecessary ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) that may negatively affect your overall oral health. (SLS is a soap additive used to cause the foaming when used that has been linked to canker sores).

Mixtures of baking soda and salt were used as toothpaste long before commercial toothpastes were invented. It still works better than many toothpastes you see in stores. Baking soda helps prevent bad breath by neutralizing acids that aid the breakdown of VSCs–the culprit behind halitosis.

How do you make toothpaste?

  • Create a mixture of baking soda and salt in a 3:1 proportion.
  • Sprinkle this mixture on a wet toothbrush and brush your teeth as you normally do.

It’s simple and uncomplicated. You should see an improvement in your breath in a matter of days or weeks. You might also see whiter teeth as well.

10. Find the exact cause and attack it

For a long-term benefit, you’ve got to find the exact cause of bad breath, and then attack the cause with a good remedy. Otherwise, you’re getting nowhere. So stop blindly searching for a bad breath remedy.

Conclusion

Don’t let your bad breath hinder your social life. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix that cures your bad breath in a few hours or days. In order to get rid of bad breath, you need to develop a plan and work at it. Be persistent, and you will eventually succeed.
